What is Syrup Saga?
Dip into Syrup Saga, an ambitious, fun, and delicious post-apocalyptic adventure/action webcomic that takes itself way too seriously set in the Foodlands. Imagine a vast, crusted wasteland where humanity vanished 850 years ago, leaving behind only sentient, humanoid food struggling to survive. The story follows Stack, the world’s last surviving pancake — a tough, flapjack with a spatula and a stubborn promise to his dead mentor — as he journeys across ruins and hostile enemy territories to collect scattered fragments of the ancient Breakfast recipe, the only thing that can revive his clan.
The plan is to take this webcomic as far as creativity (with major input from fans) can go. This is more than just a comic, it’s a world, so anything is possible. The main goal is a long running webcomic, with physical prints, figurines, books, and animated show/films as ideas of what could be. Sky is the limit but It all depends on support from Syrup Saga’s fan base.
What are the Foodlands?
The Foodlands are a vast, fractured wasteland and the world in which the Syrup Saga takes place. After many years of wars and chaos like the cataclysmic Feast Wars, the once bountiful and food loved land turned into a barren landscape where the remaining foodies struggle for survival and power. Divided among seven Great Clans—the Pasta Empire, Meat Federation, Dairy Dominion, Vegetable Vanguard, Bread Brotherhood, Condiment Cartel and the Sweet Dynasty—the land is a cracked food-littered war zone of salted wastes, charred plains, and hidden oases, where rare resources like Crispies- a universal currency, and pure maple syrup can make a foodkind unstoppable or drive them mad with power.
In this unforgiving land of leftovers lie forgotten legends, old human relics, tattered lesser clans, with crazed foods and brazen bounty hunters that’ll do anything for their own survival. Here in the Foodlands, hope is as scarce as a friendly face.
What are Servings and Bites?
Syrup Saga will be broken up into Servings, think of these as books or short volumes. Each Serving then has 4 to 5 Bites, these are like chapters within a book. Some Servings will have Extra Helpings, which act as a book’s epilogue or afterword, usually giving a cliffhanger. Some Servings may include an Appetizer, these will be like a prologue or intro chapter, maybe taking place in the past or in an separate region in the Foodlands.
When do new pages release?
New pages will release once a week. There may be times when there could be a second page a few days later in the same week. It all depends on how much art the artist can finish and how much time his two kids spend jumping on him.
How do I support the comic?
For now, the best way to support the comic is to join the discord community and show your love for the project. The next step is to become a member through Patreon as this helps financially so Dane can put more time into drawing. The ultimate hope is to be able to work on Syrup Saga full time! Another way to help is sharing posts on social media to help grow the foodies community.
Who is the artist?
The artist and creator of the web comic is Dane Tonnis. A food loving artist living in Oregon originally from Los Angeles, California. One of his first comics was called Pancake Boy, which he created in 1999. It would have two future iterations before ultimately becoming Syrup Saga in 2026. His other comics include The Santa Enigma and Jezebelle in Hell. He is also known in the NFT community as Danetron3030 where he honed his digital art skills for a few years.
Dane has a wife and two young boys and lives in a small town. He has a cat and a dog. Dane likes pancakes over waffles. If Dane lived in the Foodlands, he would choose the Meat Federation as his clan and secretly hoard as many Crispies as he could.
